Lot Whitcomb Elementary School

North Clackamas School District

The 450-student, K-5 Lot Whitcomb Elementary School is well known for its comprehensive programs to create a Compassionate School environment, informed by trauma-informed and mindful practices and an integrated support team focused on student resiliency. The Opsis renovation of the existing 1958 facility brought improved facilities and a fresh, colorful interior palette that welcomes students and connects them through a strong sense of community.

Students are welcomed by a bright front door and a new, cross-laminated timber (CLT) entry canopy that creates a large covered plaza.

New corridors provide access to classrooms that were previously disconnected from the main school and a refreshed courtyard doubles as a cafeteria extension and outdoor learning space.

The renovated main entry also provides added security features. The reconfigured administration area allows staff to monitor visitors and provides functional work spaces. Public spaces such as the library, after school programs, and parents’ groups were relocated near the main entry, creating better opportunities for public and after-hours use. A new lobby links a free-standing gym to the main school building.

Four new classrooms, restrooms, and breakout spaces replace existing modular buildings. The renovation includes system upgrades such as new, efficient furnaces, boilers, and water heaters, as well as a new sprinkler system, hazardous material abatement, and seismic upgrades. The school received new flooring, acoustical ceilings, paint, casework, LED lighting and modernized all existing classrooms.

The cafeteria was resized and new clerestory windows added to create a bright and functional school commons. Additional square footage was used to create a music room and cool down space.

Opsis worked closely with the school staff, teachers and the CM/GC contractor to execute a phased, occupied renovation, completing the project in ten months and ahead of schedule.
