Our Beginnings

Derived from the Greek root for “vision-making,” Opsis embodies the synthesis of elements into innovative, contextual, and evocative architecture. Our name reflects our commitment to uncovering the inherent potential and distinctive voice within each project. We foster an inclusive design culture designed to evolve and flourish over time.

Established in June 1999 by Alec Holser, Jim Kalvelage, and James Meyer, Opsis was born from a vision of a design-centric practice inspired by the creativity and open dialogue cultivated in design studios at the University of Oregon Architecture School. Our founders aimed to establish a regional and national standard for design excellence grounded in placemaking and sustainable practices, realized through an inclusive and collaborative design process.

Today, Opsis thrives as a firm with a diverse practice, led by nine principals. Our journey to national recognition includes our ranking as the 24th firm in the country in the 2018 Architect magazine Architect 50 program, highlighting our commitment to design quality, sustainability integration, and sound business practices.
