Smith Gym Sacred Space Study

Jesuit High School

The Smith Gym Sacred Space project transforms the existing 1965 axillary gymnasium into a multi-purpose facility to hold weekly Mass services, school and community events, competitive athletics and daily physical education classes.

Size: Portland, OR
Location: 11,000 sf

The project creates a new main entry off the Hayes Plaza framed by a wooded screen backdrop of the Mary bronze statue.

Inside, a wood ceiling creates a warm, community-focused space with theatrical lighting and digital sound systems. Motorized bleachers will quickly accommodate seating the full 1,350 student body. Advanced digital video technology will display a seamless 70-foot image to set the stage for a wide range of events. The project also includes a renovation of the existing adjacent Spirit Store and new gym storage space.
