The Madras Aquatic Center, funded through a community bond measure, is a center of this active community located in the high desert north of Bend, Oregon. Located on a dramatic site overlooking the Cascade mountain range, the design stretched the building along the ridge with a sweeping gentle roof form.

The simple material palate relates to the surrounding environment through the natural wood elements and was designed to be durable and long lasting. Warm wood walls and ceilings blend indoors with outdoors.
The facility includes a recreation pool for play, therapy and swim lessons, a whirlpool, and a six-lane lap pool that can accommodate high school practice and swim meets. Sustainable design features are incorporated throughout the facility to maximize the facility’s energy efficiency, serving as a model for responsible development.
A large expanse of glazing provides excellent views from the pool areas out to the surrounding landscape.
